Our Mission

Our mission is to publish work by young writers that feels too strange, too intense, or too experimental to fit cleanly in more conventional literary spaces. We value writing that actually breathes: work that resists neatness and is truly alive. At its core, MOUTHFUL exists to make a home for emerging voices to be heard in their full volume, not in a flattened whisper.

Virgil Freier - Founding Editor

Virgil Freier (he/him) is a transmasculine writer and undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying Data Science and English. He was born at 11:11 p.m. and has been unable to stop making things since. A poet and fiction writer, he can usually be found writing, plotting, singing anything from opera to Vocaloid music, or obsessively playing Pokémon games. His poetry has appeared in Up North Lit and is forthcoming in Infocalypse’s October 2026 issue.
